Outs of Bounds is Here!

The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival starts tonight! First up are stand-up comics Matt Bearden and Maria Bamford along with comedy duo Lovey and Lovey playing at Esther's Pool on Sixth Street. Then, this Wednesday at 8 PM, The Starter Kit kicks off the first set of shows at the Salvage Vanguard Theater.

We welcome back Zach from his time studying improv in Chicago the last couple of months and Ann makes a special trip back from her new home in Los Angeles to take part in the show. This show also has the formal debut of our new troupe member, Erik Adams. Those who came to our Double Barrel show two weeks ago at The Hideout Theatre saw Erik's unannounced premiere as a Kitter and know what a great addition he makes.

Late Night Dining...

The Starter Kit's own Eric and Aden team up with a co-worker (whose name escapes me and can't be found anywhere on their website) to produce one of Austin's newest public access TV shows: The Late Night Lunch Show. The format is very entertaining and one most people can relate to: having a casual conversation over a good meal... with a camera pointed at you. Self-produced sketches and interviews are injected into the show as well. Here's an example of a LNL sketch about little-known Texas history.

A Member of The Starter Kit Gets Superheroic

Besdies TSK shows, I'm in an improvised superhero comedy show called Ka-Baam that's finishing up its run at The Hideout Theatre on July 5. My friend, Brian Cronin, just published an entry about us on his blog at ComicBookResources.com. The audience chooses the heroes, a narrators sets the scenes as we act out the origins of the heroes, a comic book artist in the audience draws a mock cover of a team adventure of those heroes while the origins take place (we've had a Hippopotamus of Perpetual Sorrow and robots from outer space on the cover, among other things), and then we have a 40- to 50-minute adventure based on the mock cover art. So far, I've been Captain Margerine, the villainous Legal Eagle, Ophelia the beautiful love interest of Java Man, and more. The show is a lot of fun, and I encrouage everyone to come check it out before the run ends. Arrested Development movie in 2009?

Many members of The Starter Kit are huge fans of Arrested Development. After cancellation, rumors have grown around the idea of full-length motion picture. In a DVD extra on Season 3, Mitch Hurwitz (the show's creator) mentioned that he was done with AD on television and wanted to get the show a chance in theaters.

The writers' strike in Hollywood gave many of the cast members time to discuss the possibility of the movie, and everyone seemed on board with the concept. In a recent interview with Jason Bateman, The Times Online scored some huge news: "A big-screen version of Arrested Development is planned for next year." Let's hope everything stays according to plan. You can read the entire interview here.

In the meantime, you can catch many of the AD crew in other pilots Fox picked up. Mitch Hurwitz got Jason Bateman, Henry Winkler and Will Arnett to provide voices for his new animated series, "Sit Down, Shut Up." Cheri Oteri, Kenan Thompson and Maria Bamford will also have roles. Austin's biggest comedy festival rolls through town on Labor Day weekend, and The Starter Kit is glad to be a part of it. Guess Who's Turning 1 Year Old?

The Comedic Stylings of . . .

Us. That's a link to a show of ours from a little over a month ago. We're much bigger in person. And less blurry.

We're going to be the "featured players" in an upcoming Maestro (or Micetro if you want) on Saturday, April 5. What exactly that means, I haven't quite worked out yet. You'll hopefully get all the usual antics of a high-quality Maestro show (it's how I want to spell it). A show with fun games, quick wit, solid scenes, and an interactive spirit. Add that to what epitomizes a great Starter Kit show. Stuff like infectious energy, character-driven moments mixed with random insanity, almost fearless (I think it would be a lie to say they're completely fearless) choices on stage, and a real sense of connecting with each other on stage.

There's a description of Maestro in the link I give above. However, when people ask me what it's about, my fastest way of explaining it is to say, "It's like 'Whose Line is it Anyway?' meets 'Survivor', except the audience gets to vote people off the stage as the show progresses." There's a little more to it, but that essentially sums it up if you haven't seen a Maestro show before. And if you haven't, April 5 would be a great day to try it out. See what I did there? I'm sneaky like that.
